COMPUTER BATTERY
A battery is a hardware component that supplies power to a device, enabling it to work without a power cord. It converts stored chemical energy into electrical energy through chemical reactions and transfers it to a circuit. Batteries can power a laptop for several hours depending on how much power the system requires.
How Batteries Work
Batteries generate electrical energy through internal chemical reactions. As long as the chemical materials inside can continue reacting, electricity is produced. Once the chemical resources are depleted, the battery runs out of power. Rechargeable batteries allow the reaction to be reversed by applying electrical current. Though more expensive, they can be reused many times through charge‑discharge cycles, offering a longer lifespan.
The Three Types of Computer Batteries
CMOS Battery (Backup Battery) — This small coin‑sized battery holds your computer’s settings such as time and date. Without it, you’d have to reset these each time the computer starts. It powers the CMOS chip that stores clock and hardware settings and typically lasts about ten years.
Bridge Battery — An auxiliary power source that keeps the laptop alive when the main battery is replaced. It’s smaller and less powerful but maintains power briefly during battery swaps.
Main Battery — The primary source that makes laptops portable. It stores charge and supplies it to components whenever required.
Battery Technologies
Lithium‑Ion (Li‑Ion) — The most common type today. Lightweight, fast‑charging, and free from the “memory effect.” Environmentally friendlier than older types.
Lithium‑Polymer (Li‑Po) — Slimmer and flexible, ideal for thin notebooks. Similar to Li‑Ion but more chemically flammable, requiring extra caution.
Nickel‑Metal Hydride (NiMH) — High‑capacity batteries that enable long usage but may lose energy during long storage.
Nickel‑Cadmium (NiCd) — Outdated technology once common in laptops. Heavy and prone to the “memory effect,” which reduces full recharge capacity over time.
Smart Batteries
Smart batteries contain internal circuit boards that communicate with the laptop to monitor performance, voltage, and temperature. They run about 15% longer and provide accurate “fuel gauge” readings for remaining runtime.
Battery Specifications
Laptop battery cells commonly use 3.7 V voltage and capacities of 2200 mAh, 2600 mAh, or 2800 mAh. Using a lower‑capacity replacement (e.g., 2200 mAh instead of 2800 mAh) results in shorter battery life.
